This was Scarlet’s response to the twin brothers when they asked her about whether she had promised the dance to other boys in the next ball. From this quote, we know that Scarlet was popular among boys since there were always boys inviting her to the prom, but she was still able to give the Tarleton brothers that she was crazy about them, which is apparently not true as we reader know later that she was actually in love with Ashley. The brothers were so addicted to Scarlet that they wanted her to only dance with them. However, on the other side, Scarlet didn’t care that much about the boys. Scarlet was good at social networking. Such skill may or may not help in the upcoming war.



“Oh, Pa,” cried Scarlet impatiently, “if I married him, I’d change all that!”

Scarlet was talking about Ashley, the man she fell in love with. After Scarlet's dad told her that Ashley was a weird guy, she still persisted on her idea of marrying Ashley.  Scarlet decided all on her own assumptions without any close examination. She was only a girl dreaming about love. With the background of upcoming war, we knew that the novel would be about the naive girl’s interaction with the war.

Scarlet is a frank and brave girl, so she would say what she thought. She loved Ashley so much that she wanted him to be hers. However, Scarlet was arrogant as well as she believed that Ashley was actually in love with her.

Gone with the Wind

 

“If you say ‘war’ just once more, I’ll go in the house and shut the door.”

This quotation is from Scarlet when the Tarleton brothers told her there will be a war happening. This reveals the setting of the novel which is in the pre-war period. This quotation is also predicting that the story of the character will probably be strongly connected to the war. At the same time, this quotation shows Scarlet’s extraordinary dislike and distrust about the war, which indicates her possible future panic when the war actually starts. From this quotation, readers are supposed to understand that Scarlet has no preparation or experience about the war. The novel is trying to show a lonely young girl’s struggling and effort facing the monster of war.

 

“Spying, my God! You darkies know everything that goes on. Why, you liar, I saw you with my

own eyes sidle round the corner of the porch and squat in the cape jessamine bush by the wall.”

This quotation is from Brent when they realize that Scarlet might be angry with them. The word “blackies” he used to call his black body servant boy and his unconscious word choice of calling the boy “liar” shows that the racism is pervasive in the setting of the story where black people are the inferior class.

 

Horse:

All male and some of the female in the novel know how to ride a horse. They must live in a flatland region.

 

Carriage:

Parties, balls are part of the protagonist’s life. People around protagonist are the high class in the society and have slaves working for them. They have no real worrier about living, and dawdling is the only thing to do for some young people including Scarlet.

 

Guns:

The guns are not only for hunting, also for fighting. People are preparing themselves for the war. The novel starts at the time before the war.

 

Lemon verbena sachet:

This is an ornament of Scarlet’s mom. The sachet indicates the impression of ideal women in the place of where the novel took place: soft, fragrant and warm. 

1. The jealousy, as the audience are able to see how jealousy causes  Ensign(or whoever he is in Othello) to manipulate other characters and how other characters fell into his plan because of their misinterpration of each other. This is a dramatic sarcasm.

2. He will suicide. There is no enough reason for Ensign to kill him and it would be a boring story if he got excecuted.
